Barns In The Landscape 2010-13

In 2014 I was invited to create a series of barn paintings for the historic Pioneer Gallery at the  Smithy Art Center in Cooperstown, NY. The barns I chose to depict all have a strong design, a unique character, and are beautifully situated in the landscape. Driving the country roads of New York State over the years I’ve admired these human expressions rising up out of the landscape. Sometimes they stand out like beacons on the horizon while other times they nestle into the surroundings. A sketchy paint treatment, revealing the layers from tonal to opaque strokes was how I chose to echo the barn’s simultaneous unification with and emergence from the land.

* Included in this gallery are additional barn paintings done prior to this show (images 12-20).
