Three Trees 2007-2010

This series was done while maintaining a studio in the basement of a tenement building in Greenwich Village. During my time there (2000-2011) I watched the Hudson River Park take shape including the planting of these three Zelkova trees one block from my studio (and a bike lane). They were a constant source of inspiration in every season. I love how their tree canopy created an “exterior-interior” to commune under and a soft irregular framing of the linear urban hardscape . It was the beginning of the MillionTreesNYC initiative to grow New York City’s urban forest and, for me, these trees represented the beginning of an era of re-greening the NYC landscape.
